Welcome back to week 2 of my weekly series—”What I’m Listening To”—where I plan to go through the top few songs, albums, or anything else that I’ve been listening to. I don’t plan to review the songs, as I am in no way a music expert, but more so plan to give my thoughts on how the songs make me feel and maybe what the song is about. Also, sorry in advance that I may get on random tangents, I’m trying to keep these posts as close to how I’d describe them in real life.
Phem—W.W.C.B.D. (ft. Alison Wonderland)
An upbeat, fun song that is taking advantage of the new Netflix series, “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness.” While it is a short song, approximately a minute and a half, it packs many cool elements. The vocals sound like they’re from an awesome alternative-rock song from the ’90s, and the beat is simple, yet strangely captures an emotion that I can’t describe. About halfway through, the instrumental has a breakdown that you cannot help but dance to. It is a definite banger, and I recommend giving it a listen.
Rezz & Grabbitz—Someone Else
The first song Rezz has released under her new label, RCA, “Someone Else,” reminds me of a rock song that has Rezz’s usual electronic sound mixed into it. From the lyrics, I interpret the song to be about how people will ignore blatant red flags for someone they’re in love with, but one day realizes that the person they love is “someone else.” For everyone who loves rock music, or for everyone who loves electronic music, you are sure to love this song. It makes me feel like headbanging and dancing around my room. Once the ongoing pandemic is over, and we can return to “normal,” this is a song I can’t wait to see live. It is my new favorite Rezz song.
Salva—Sup
This is a song that I was introduced to through Alison Wonderland’s Digital Mirage set, where she transitioned from this to one of her songs. “Sup,” is a really energetic, but relatively short, electronic song that I am surprised I haven’t heard more often in other live sets. I feel like every artist should be playing this, as I’d imagine it goes even harder live.
Mac Miller—The Divine Feminine
First off, rest in peace Mac, we all miss you. Now I’ll be honest, I am not an OG Mac Miller fan, but I would say I was there for the albums he wasn’t getting as much love for, such as this album, “The Divine Feminine.” I am a sucker for jazz instrumentals in songs, and this album is FULL of them, and probably one of the reasons I fell in love with the album as a whole when it was first released. It is one of a very short list of albums that I regularly listen to from cover-to-cover, it is THAT good of an album. My favorite song changes every now and then, and currently, my favorite is, “Cinderella,” featuring Ty Dolla $ign. It’s a song that gets me in the “feels” and is a song that I can listen to at any time of the day, and in any mood, and still, get sad about the entire concept of being in love. The music video also adds another element to the song that is hard to explain how it makes me feel.
Tory Lanez—Broke In A Minute
A song I’m somewhat embarrassed to say that I was introduced to through TikTok, as I am not an avid Tory Lanez fan. I am a definite fan of rap music, and this is a song that does not disappoint my love for lyrical raps with amazing instrumentals. I will be honest though when I typically listen to this song, I am paying more attention to the beat of the song than the lyrics. The hook does exactly that, hooks you into the song. The only disappointing thing about the song is the length, which is only two minutes long.
